Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Nilgiri Mountain Railway, one of the oldest railways in India. Built in 1908 and runs between mettupalayam and Ooty. It is unique because still using steam locomotives. Nilgiri Mountain Railway is built by British and it was added to the UNESCO world heritage site in 2005.

The train covers 40 kms in the Mountain. The train route is scenic and it runs across beautiful water falls, bridges and streams. It stops in stations like kallar, adderly, hillgrove, kateri, Coonoor, wellington, aravankadu, ketti and lovedale. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ooty. Lakhs of visitors using this train every year. It is very hard to get tickets during the summer months of april and may.

This beautiful small train runs twice daily. And get passengers from Mettupalayam to Ooty and ooty to Mettupalayam. The train journey is apporximately 4 hours. Some times it will take longer due to elephants crossing and other causes. Recently the Nilgiri Montain Railway celebrated its 106th Anniversary with colourful events.
