Kotagiri is a small town in the Nilgiri Hills. Located 35 kms away from the popular hill station Ooty. Kodanad View Point, Rangaswamy Peak, Rangaswamy Pillar, Elk Falls and Catherine Falls are most sought attractions near kotagiri. Trekking through the jungles is the interesting activity for many of the visitors. Kotagiri to Kodanad through the rough hills and streams is the most popular trekking trail here.
The name kotagiri comes from the tribe "kota" living here. The kota tribes are living here for a very long time and the tribe is no longer a majority. Their numbers are fast reducing. They are known for their pottery making skills.
Tea plantation is the major source of local economy. The tea plantation in kotagiri is started in the year 1843 by the british man M.D.Cockburn. Since then tea plantations grown in number and new tea estates were opened. Recent survey shows there were atleast 30,000 scres of tea plantations.
Nearest airport to kotagiri is located in Coimbatore which is 68kms downhill. Frequent buses to kotagiri is available from Ooty and Coonoor. Taxi and jeeps can be hired from Ooty for sightseeing in Kotagiri.
Accommodation is cheaper in kotagiri compare to Ooty and Coonoor. There are many cottages are available for holiday renting. You can also stay in the tea plation bungalows for a different experience. Finding and renting this type of bungalows are not difficult in kotagiri.
